Congregational Library, 14 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108 617-523-0470

Volunteer internship

Begun in 1853, the Congregational Library and Archive is open to researchers, ministers, students, and lay people of all denominations. The library’s uniqueness lies in the breadth and depth of its resources dealing with the religious, political, economic, and cultural role of Congregationalism in New England. The heart of the 225,000 + title collection includes many rare books, pamphlets, and periodicals. In 2005, the Library began the process of automating its manual card catalog. We’re located on historic Beacon Hill across from the State House and next door to the Boston Athenaeum.

The internship is a volunteer position intended to provide an individual with experience in a special research library. We have projects involving cataloging, archive and library organization-physical and electronic, circulation, customer service, tours, events, reference, data entry, and de-accessioning. Previous volunteers have researched topics and created exhibits and promotional material. If there is a special library area you would like experience in, please contact us. We may have an opportunity for you to gain the skills you need for your next job.

Prior work experience, excellent communication skills, and an interest in special collections, history and/or religion preferred. No religious affiliation is required. The ability to work at least 3 or more hours per week and a commitment of 3 months is requested. The library is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM and is near public transportation.

This is a temporary position without compensation or benefits. Upon successful completion, the intern will be provided with a reference from the Congregational Library.

To apply, please send resume and cover letter to Claudette Newhall, Associate Librarian (cnewhall@14beacon.org).
