The Museum:
The Museum of African American History was incorporated in 1967 to preserve, conserve, and interpret the contributions of people of African descent and those who have found common cause with them in the struggle for liberty, dignity, and justice for all Americans. Through exhibitions, education projects, public programs, and the display of unique items from our collections, the Museum places the African-American experience in an accurate social, cultural, and historical perspective.
The Position:
The Museum is seeking a Collections Manager who will report to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions. The Collections Manager will be responsible for the effective management of the Museum’s collections that include manuscripts, books, photographs, prints, paintings, furniture, sculpture, and other artifacts, including some archaeological materials. The Collections Manager will help to plan and implement a new project to digitize the collections. The Collections Manager must demonstrate a competence in history as well as material culture and will be expected to develop a working knowledge of the collections in order to be a resource to the staff and others. The successful candidate will be flexible, work well independently as well as with a team, and have excellent communication and project management skills. This position is funded through August 2009 by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Future funding is being sought and is expected.
Responsibilities Include:
- Assure optimum care and monitoring of the collections
- Catalogue collections in database
- Manage all requests for loans and reproduction agreements, including completing forms, packing, shipping, and insurance arrangements
- Respond to research requests from inside and outside the Museum
- Prepare reports as requested
- Provide digital images for use by Museum staff or others
- Assisting with exhibition development
Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science, Museum Studies, or Related Field
- Excellent computer skills including facility with collections database or similar programs
- Knowledge of conservation and handling of museum collections
- Experience with digital photography
- Knowledge of African-American history is preferred
- Experience with Past Perfect is desired
- Some knowledge of archaeology is preferred
