Federal Aviation Administration
Library Science Internship Announcement
Description
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Office of Aviation Policy and Plans (APO) will offer an unpaid library science internship during the summer of 2008. This opportunity is designed to provide work experience within the federal government for students pursuing a library science career. A senior FAA librarian will supervise the intern. The manager of the Systems and Policy Analysis Division (APO-200) will arrange projects and other work responsibilities with the approval of the supervising librarian.
The intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist in the development of a system to catalogue files within APO’s extensive electronic library. The ultimate goal of this activity is to improve APO’s ability to research issues and document past decisions.
APO is attempting to integrate search software, which includes meta tags and version controls. The intern will play a key role during the implementation stage of this software. Assignments may include evaluating the effectiveness of this technology, suggesting changes, and developing guidelines for proper use—e.g. optimizing meta tags for the needs of a particular office. No direct experience is necessary in this area, but a basic knowledge of one or more of the following is preferred: metadata, metatagging, or electronic file search software.
Benefits for the student
Upon successful completion of the internship the intern may receive:
- Graduate credit from their university
- Practical professional experience
- Consideration for an extended paid internship through the FAA
Student Intern Program
Life in Washington, DC
- Area amusements include numerous museums, historical sites,
monuments, King’s Dominion, and State and National Parks.
- Many great housing opportunities and night life for students
within the metro area, including Adams Morgan, Foggy Bottom and
Georgetown.
Contact Lawrence MacDonald for more details.
- APO offers a very strong social environment. Due to the growing number of young professionals within this office, social opportunities such as mixers, a seasonal softball team, and picnics are common.
Requirements
The internship is open to graduate level students within an accredited
library science or other closely related program. The individual selected must complete at least 150 hours of professional work, through the application of library science techniques, theories, and processes. It is the student’s responsibility to fulfill all university requirements (e.g. obtaining department approval, documentation) to ensure course credit is earned.
How to apply
The candidate’s application package must include:
- The student’s resume with applicable work experience, educational history, and special interests/extracurricular sections;
- A letter of recommendation from a university faculty member
under which the candidate has studied;
- Optional: A letter of recommendation from an employer for
which the intern candidate has worked within the last five years.
This opportunity should be discussed with the department Internship Coordinator or an appropriate advisor to identify the University’s requirements for academic credit.
Complete application packages must be sent to:
Lawrence.MacDonald@faa.gov by midnight, May 12, 2008. If you have any problems sending the application please contact Larry MacDonald at 202-267-3568.
What we do
The FAA’s Office of Aviation Policy and Plans develops policies, goals and priorities, forecasts future aviation technology and demand and analyzes the economic impact of regulations for the FAA. APO coordinates the agency’s reauthorization before Congress, and is responsible for national aviation policies and strategies. These responsibilities involve economic analyses, research, and aviation stakeholder outreach.
