Position Description

JOB TITLE: COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT/ REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

LOCATION: Academy Library

HOURS: Average 37.5 hours a week. Scheduled hours vary according to the needs of the Academy Library. Includes one night’s duty a week and weekend duty.

SCHEDULE: Full time salaried position.

FUNCTION: Supervise the acquisition of library materials including books, videos, DVDs, music and recorded books and CDs, standing orders, gifts. Daily reference desk and other public service duties as assigned by the Academy Librarian.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Order library materials, which includes preparation of orders and maintenance of necessary records and order searching.
  • Supervise receipt of all incoming library materials. This includes payment and following up problems.
  • Share in responsibility for selection of material.
  • Keep track of expenditures, especially special funds.
  • Maintain a record of gift books.
  • Scheduled duty at the Reference Desk.
  • Participate in library orientation program, the teaching of library skills and in conducting library tours as needed.
  • Maintain a new Acquisitions Bulletin Board.
  • Notify patrons of requested books.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Cooperate as a team member with the Library staff in performing any professional or non-professional duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operation. This includes an agreement to work evening and weekend hours as scheduled.

SUPERVISION: Coordinates work with the Catalog and Special Collections Librarian, and reports directly to the Academy Librarian.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Excellent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training: Masters Degree in Library Science.

Experience: Preferably several years of professional library experience, including experience in working with acquisitions procedures, also familiarity with OCLC records.

Physical Demands: To perform the essential function of the job the following applies: requires standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting and transporting a minimum of 25 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs. Must be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks under extended heavy pressure and be able to function in a fast-paced environment. Must be capable of using a visual display monitor with continuous wrist movement on keyboard.
