Immediate Opening for Full-Time Library Assistant
Reference Services Department

The American Antiquarian Society is a learned society founded in 1812 that supports a research library specializing in American history, life, and culture from settlement through the year 1876. The library serves a world-wide community of scholars. Library Assistant Duties

  • Provide general assistance with the reading room operations of a rare book research library
  • Page and reshelve collection materials
  • Prepare photocopies of materials
  • Monitor the Reference Desk and the distribution and return of collection items
  • Oversee patron use of collection materials and ensure all library security rules are enforced
  • Acquaint and assist readers with library holdings and policies of collection use
  • Assist patrons with the use of the public and online catalogues
  • Provide reference assistance to readers
  • Maintenance of the collection and equipment in the Microfilm Room
  • Respond to inquiries at the direction of the Reference Librarian
  • Assist at the Reception Desk while the receptionist takes a break and as needed
  • Shelve book dealer and auction catalogues Perform routine clerical duties
  • Undertake special projects as assigned

Education/experience: Excellent interpersonal skills and dedication to customer service required. General experience in a library or museum setting preferred. College degree with interest in history or literature required. Minority candidates are encouraged.

Position Available: Starting Immediately Salary: $11.00 per hour 35 hour week Schedule: 9am-5 pm M-F Benefits: Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Paid Vacation, Personal and Sick Days. Professional Development opportunities
