POSITION TITLE: Reference / Instructional Services Librarian

DEPARTMENT: Emmanuel d’ Alzon Library, Assumption College, Worcester, MA

REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Head, Reference & Instructional Services

BASIC PURPOSE: Provide the full range of reference and instructional services to library patrons in support of the mission of the College.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Aids library patrons by answering their questions and assisting them in locating, evaluating, and using print and electronic materials, both on and off campus.

  • Provides individual and group library instruction to the College community in the use of library resources and prepares reference aids as appropriate.

  • In the absence of the Director, Associate Director, and Department Heads occasionally manages the Library, including oversight of student workers.

  • Promotes awareness of library services and resources.

  • Assists in the collection development of the Reference collection and the circulating collection and independently serves as liaison to one or more academic departments.

  • Participates in the selection of electronic resources for the collection.

  • Regularly participates in Library planning which includes activities such as: formulating and implementing management and operating policy, determining and prioritizing objectives in order to meet the needs of the larger academic community, developing and implementing library programs and new initiatives, advising and consulting in specific area(s) of expertise, and resolving problems.

  • Participates in professional associations and other appropriate venues for continuing education and professional development.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be willing to contribute actively to the mission of the College as well as show respect for the Catholic and Assumptionist identity of Assumption College.

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.

  • Ability to work collaboratively while demonstrating initiative, resourcefulness, and commitment to providing excellent service.

  • Must be willing to work late at least one evening per week and several Sundays during calendar year.

  • Must possess excellent computer skills including: Familiarity with integrated library systems, such as Voyager, online databases, and Internet resources;

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel

  • Familiarity with web authoring tools; Understanding of desktop computer hardware; Web authoring tools (desired);

  • Knowledgeable of and committed to providing innovative technology; Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing;

  • Ability to work effectively and tactfully under pressure in a rapidly changing environment;

  • Ability and willingness to represent the College through participation in library professional organizations.

SCOPE:

  • Interacts on a regular basis with Assumption College students, faculty, and staff;

  • Interacts with members of the Worcester community and with staff and patrons of area libraries through the Academic and Research Collaborative (ARC);

  • Maintains a close affiliation and interaction with one or more academic departments.
