Librarian/Information Specialist
(Exempt position)
The Suicide Prevention Resource Center at EDC, Inc. has an opening for a Library/Resource Specialist (II), in Newton, MA.
The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC), established in 2002, is a national resource center that provides technical assistance, training and information at the national, regional, state, tribal, and local levels, in order to strengthen suicide prevention networks and advance the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. The Center is supported by a grant from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is based within Health and Human Development programs at EDC (http://www.hhd.org).
The SPRC web site (http://www.sprc.org) provides resources and information about national and state suicide prevention activities. Key features, which are updated frequently (some daily) include an online library, information on training, research findings, funding opportunities, government publications, links to other suicide prevention web sites, and events. Launched in 2003, the SPRC web site has averages of 55,000 visits per month. SPRC has more than 30 staff. Most are located in Newton but others are in the DC office, or in remote locations throughout the United States.
Summary: The Information Specialist/Librarian will report to the Information and Publications Coordinator and will have major responsibility for maintaining the SPRC library, providing reference services, and managing print and electronic resources that are disseminated through the SPRC online catalog and website, electronic mailing lists, and publications.
Essential functions:
- Develop, classify and maintain a collection of print and non-print resources related to suicide, suicide prevention and mental health promotion.
- Systematically review core peer-reviewed journals to identify recent research on suicide prevention and disseminate summaries to project staff and/or constituents.
- Assist with producing and disseminating the SPRC email newsletter.
- Keep current on discussion lists, journals, suicide-related information and media coverage on suicide prevention; share information appropriately with staff.
- Provide library training to project staff, including the use and function of bibliographic finding tools and indexes to the literature.
- Respond to reference requests received via phone, email or through the Center’s website and assist project staff with technical assistance.
- Assist staff in finding resources to respond to specific requests for technical assistance.
- Maintain the SPRC online catalog. Solicit feedback from staff and recommend modifications as needed.
- Represent SPRC at meetings and conferences on an occasional basis as needed.
- Participate in regular meetings with other SPRC specialists to coordinate and plan the Center’s delivery of services.
- Serve on SPRC workgroups and teams as assigned and appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Library Science strongly preferred; equivalent experience acceptable. At least one year of experience as a reference librarian preferred. Additional experience and/or education in a mental health or social sciences discipline highly desirable. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must have initiative and creativity in analyzing and following through on research and writing tasks. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously. Responsiveness and a patron-oriented focus are strongly valued. Excellent telephone presence and customer service skills required along with good writing and communication skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office required; familiarity with MS Access, Filemaker Pro, HTML, blogging and/or wiki software preferred.
