JOB TITLE:
Library Reference Assistant. The successful candidate will work on the Phillips Library Reference Desk 10 hours per week.
REPORTS TO: Head of Reference ande Public Service
OVERVIEW:
The Phillips Library is a rare book and manuscript repository with
approximately 400,000 volumes and more than 5,000 linear feet of
manuscript material. The Library also holds more than a million
photographs and has substantial holdings in many areas, including
Maritime, East Asian, American Decorative Arts, and local and regional
materials. The Phillips Library is an amalgamation of the libraries of more than a half dozen institutions over the last 209 years. It
services a worldwide audience, in its own heritage building and from
afar. The primary function of the position is helping the other
librarians in managing reading room operations in rare books and
manuscripts. This includes daily activities as well as planning,
implementation, and review of reference room procedures.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Daily activities include greeting researchers and orienting
them to the reading room the cart catalogs, and specialized sources;
offering reference assistance; monitoring distribution, use, and return of printed, manuscript, photographic, and microfilmed materials.
- Perform reference services an areas of the library’s
greatest strengths, especially maritime and local history and genealogy.
- Assist patrons in using the library’s Reading Room by recommending search strategies and locating library sources as well as sources outside the library.
- Perform support activities including paging and reshelving
of printed and manuscript materials in all areas of the library and
answering telephone, e-mail, and letter requests for information.
- Carry out special projects or tasks as required by the
supervisor or to meet institutional needs.
- Assist patrons who come into the library by special
appointment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS or some course work in a Library School program. Planning and
organizational skills helpful. Must have good communications skills and an ability to work as a team with other staff members. Ability to lift boxes of about 40 pounds and to push library trucks.
LOCATION: The Phillips Library is part of The Peabody Essex Museum, East India Square, Salem, Massachusetts
SALARY: $16.00 per hour, 10 hours per week
