Title: Archival Fellowship/Archives Technician (GS-1421-05)
Duration: Indefinite, contingent upon maintaining half time student status
Description: The National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) is the keeper of the nation’s official memory. From court records to maritime records to military records, NARA preserves the vital permanent records of the United States government. These are records that document the rights of American citizens, the actions of Federal officials, and the national experience. NARA’s mission is to ensure continuing access to these records.
NARA’s Northeast Regional Archives, located in Waltham, MA, is a busy and fast-paced environment where we provide a high level of service to genealogists and other researchers through our reference services as well as arrangement, description, and preservation of records. The Northeast Region has over 30,000 cubic feet of federal records consisting of documents as well as maps, plans, and photographs. Our holdings include records of Federal courts, the Customs Service, the Coast Guard, the Navy, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Works Progress Administration, and more.
We are seeking an intelligent, enthusiastic individual who is ready to learn all facets of archival work at the Northeast Region. The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of roles such as assisting researchers with genealogical research in the microfilm research room and processing archival records. Specific tasks will depend on assignments, but may include carrying out holdings maintenance, arranging records, creating finding aids for historic Federal government records, and presenting genealogical workshops.
Requirements: Should possess strong interest in history and a commitment to public service. Should possess good communication skills; computer skills; attention to detail and accuracy; be able to tolerate dust; lift heavy boxes (up to 40 lbs.) over head; and climb ladders. Must provide proof of at least half time enrollment in an accredited graduate level program. Must provide proof of US Citizenship.
