Silent Spring Institute - Archivist Intern

Silent Spring Institute is seeking an archivist intern or practicum student to work with our librarian in establishing the Institute’s archive.

Silent Spring Institute’s unique history of research has created correspondence, grant proposals, reports, audio and video recordings, maps, photographs, and other documents that span the ten plus years since its founding. The archivist intern will help organize, select, catalogue, and process materials that will be housed at the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe.

We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in epidemiology, toxicology, chemistry, GIS, outreach, development, library and information science, and communications. Annual budget of approximately $1 million supports a staff of 13, working with collaborating investigators at Harvard, Brown, Boston University, etc., and activists at Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, Alliance for a Health Tomorrow, and nationally. Current research focuses on breast cancer and endocrine disrupting compounds from drinking water pollutants, household exposures, and other sources. Responsibilities:
The specific duties of this internship include:

  • helping identify and assess the archival value of materials
  • processing of the collection, including physical arrangement (sorting, boxing, labeling)
  • inventory and description of materials
  • creation of database records
  • creation of collection guides and other basic finding aids
  • drafting of a records retention policy and schedule for the historic records of the Institute, utilizing recognized archival and records management practices
  • communicating with Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library

Requirements:
Completion of at least the introductory courses in archives principles and practices via an accredited Library Science program is preferred. Good computer skills. Good communication and organization skills.
