Choate has an immediate opening for an experienced reference librarian to fill the full-time position of Research Services Librarian.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the Research Services Librarian is responsible for overseeing all aspects of general and legal reference and research, interlibrary loan, document delivery and instruction to both legal and non-legal staff. Qualified applicants will have an ALA-accredited MLS; five to seven years’ experience conducting reference and research in a law firm library, or equivalent experience in a public or special library reference position; and extensive knowledge of and the ability to educate others in the use of library resources.
Responsibilities:
- Oversees reference staff and services by coordinating the research workload, supervising complex projects and providing mentoring and training.
- Conducts reference and research at all levels of complexity, participating routinely in the reference desk rotation.
- Develops and implements best practices to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality, cost-effective research service.
- Develops, promotes, coordinates and conducts group and individual instruction to facilitate the use of library resources.
- Maintains sophisticated level of research and online skills; keeps current on developments, trends and resources and makes recommendations on their use to improve library services.
- Oversees and maintains research records and statistics.
- Assists and/or engages in other duties as assigned by the Director of Library Services.
Qualifications:
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
- 5-7 years of experience conducting reference and research in a law firm library, or equivalent experience in a public or special library reference position, with supervisory responsibility;
- Extensive knowledge of legal, business and scientific research tools in all formats.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and conduct instructional sessions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment as part of a team and independently.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Exhibits initiative and good judgment in decision-making and project management.
- Ability to prioritize and consistently meet deadlines.
- Motivated, with the ability to learn and develop new skills and responsibilities.
- Commitment to superior client service.
- Proficiency in Windows applications and Microsoft Office.
Desirable: working knowledge of html and web page development; JD from ABA-accredited institution.
