PT Assistant for Children's Room - Dracut, MA

The M G Parker Library in Dracut, Massachusetts is currently seeking a part-time children’s librarian assistant with a solid background in children’s services, knowledge of print and non-print materials pertinent to this age group and the ability to interact with children up to early teens. The hours for this part time position will average no more than 19 hours per week with no benefits and will include some Saturdays. Please note, the Library is closed on Saturdays during the summer.

Assistant for Children’s Room

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children in a library or school setting.
  • Show a definite interest and enjoyment in working with children through grade six.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Ability to be flexible and work with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Must have sufficient computer skills needed to perform the job.
  • Must be physically able to stand, reach, and lift heavy materials.
  • Must be flexible in relation to work hours and available on some Saturdays and evenings.
  • Must be courteous and use good judgment when working with the public.
  • Must be dependable and on time for work.

Duties:

  • Assist children, parents, and teachers in finding suitable reading material for the child’s age, abilities, and tastes.
  • Assist children through grade 6 and parents in finding both print and electronic information.
  • Assist children and parents in computer usage.
  • Check out materials to patrons if needed.
  • Process requests for patrons for materials not available in Dracut.
  • Supervise computer use by children.
  • Monitor behavior of children to ensure the safety and rights of patrons when in the Children’s Room.
