Library Assistant (Part-time)
The Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) seeks a part-time library assistant (up to twenty hours per week) to greet visitors and provide services to researchers who make use of the Society’s collections in the MHS reading room. Duties include staffing the front desk, orienting researchers, answering telephone and email queries, and assisting the reference staff.
The MHS is an independent research library that collects, preserves, makes accessible, and communicates manuscripts and other materials that promote the study of the history of Massachusetts and the nation—a mission that has remained constant since 1791. The MHS holds more than 3,600 manuscript collections, as well as extensive collections of early American imprints, newspapers, maps, printed ephemera, historical photographs, prints and engravings, and other research materials.
The library assistant works as part of a reference team of nine (seven FTE) and reports to the reference librarian. The library assistant greets and directs visitors as they enter the building; directs incoming telephone calls; registers researchers; explains MHS reading room policies and procedures; helps maintain the security of collections; retrieves and returns library materials for researchers and staff members; photocopies research materials; answers reference questions by email, phone, and mail; and assists with other library projects as needed.
The Historical Society library is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 AM-4:45 PM, Thursday 9:00 AM to 7:45 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM-4:00 PM. In 2009 the library will be adding a second weeknight to its regular hours of operation. This position requires some flexibility in scheduling, allowing for evening and weekend hours.
Qualifications:
The library assistant should have a demonstrated interest in American history and the ability to assist, in person and by telephone, researchers and visitors to the Society with a wide range of experience and interests. Familiarity with archival principles and providing reference assistance, as well as previous experience working in a library, museum, or other historical organization is desirable.
Salary: $14.00/hour.
Application procedure:
Please send a letter of application by email (preferred) or postal mail, including a brief resume and the names of three references to:
