Schedule: 37.5 hrs (M-F, 8:30-5:00)

Please Note: Fixed Duration Position End Date 31-Dec-2013, with a possibility of continuation.

Position General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Collections Care, the Materials Assistant I is responsible for creating enclosures and housing library collection materials. Will be part of a small preservation team located in a separate building from the Preservation Department making enclosures for volumes being prepared for the Library Storage Facility (LSF).

Essential Duties

  1. Works cooperatively with the Department’s and project’s other lead staff, managers and librarians to ensure the smooth and effective workflow of the box making operations and to accomplish the processing work of the department.
  2. Sorts incoming materials using predetermined criteria for appropriate housings.
  3. Operates computerized equipment within specified guidelines. Applies thorough knowledge of creating housings, the box making machine and its software, for the creation of boxes and other appropriate housings.
  4. Accurately measures materials for creation of housings.
  5. Creates a variety of housings for library materials using an automated box making system.
  6. Assembles housings and places library materials in housings.
  7. Keyboards and applies call numbers, labels, and barcodes.
  8. Status tracks all items coming in and leaving assigned work areas. Charges and discharges all titles under search to the appropriate department patron ID card.
  9. Tracks via electronic spreadsheet personal work statistics for the project.
  10. Assists in the daily maintenance of box-making equipment and inventory of materials and supplies for housing.
  11. Applies thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and relevant computer software.
  12. Makes suggestions for new procedures and policies in related areas.
  13. Follows project and Department procedures and policies.
  14. Tracks personal work statistics monthly via electronic spreadsheet.
  15. Retrieves and delivers library material.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.
  17. May be required to assist with emergency recovery operations
  18. Successful completion of a background check is required.

Education and Experience

  1. Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Skills & Abilities

Required:

  1. Excellent computer skills and accurate keyboarding.
  2. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Access.
  3. Good manual dexterity.
  4. Attention to details.
  5. Sustained concentration for repetitive tasks.
  6. Ability to push book trucks and lift heavy materials up to 30 lbs.
  7. Ability to move pallets of board or other oversized supplies using a hand truck. Ability to push a fully loaded book truck. Ability to lift boxes up to 30 lbs. Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
  8. Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff, and in a team setting.
  9. References must indicate reliable attendance and punctuality, accuracy and attention to detail, self-motivation, and diligent performance. References must also indicate the ability to interact and communicate tactfully and effectively with a wide variety of people, to work efficiently and independently, to organize own work to meet unit goals and priorities, to work under pressure in an environment of change, the ability to participate in setting goals and priorities with fellow team members and the ability to solve a wide range of problems in accordance with established procedures.

Preferred:

  • Experience with CAD (computer aided design) software
  • Experience in book repair or bookbinding
