This is a one -year term appointment, with the possibility of an extension.

The MIT Libraries seek a collaborative, motivated and service-focused individual to develop and support a highly effective library computing environment. This position provides the opportunity for using and developing desktop support and other computing skills to support the public and technical services of a dynamic academic library. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Local Technology Expert (LTE) provides desktop support including hardware and software upgrades, routine hardware and software maintenance and troubleshooting. The LTE keeps staff informed of changes in the local computing environment, as well as changes in the MIT computing environment. S/he trains staff on software/hardware and instructs them in routine maintenance and troubleshooting on their own workstations. The LTE serves as a resource for information about hardware, software and networking, contributes to technology planning discussions, and provides expertise in creating requests for new equipment and software. S/he takes advantage of local training opportunities and explores new technologies in order to share this knowledge with staff and to work with them in deploying technologies that support and enhance library services. The LTE works with staff members to support local applications and examines new technologies with an eye toward improving efficiency in the deployment of technology. The LTE may work on other technology projects, assist in providing service in other local units, and perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING STRUCTURE: The LTE is part of the Libraries’ desktop support team and serves as liaison between Technology Operations and assigned local libraries/departments. Under the supervision of the LTC Support Manager, s/he works closely with local library/department management to identify, understand, and respond to local priorities. The LTE is a member of the Computer Support Group, and collaborates closely with other LTEs. The current assignment of this position is to the Dewey Library (a business, economics, and social sciences library,) and includes supporting the Stata public kiosk.

QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation; 4.5 years direct/related experience. Related post-high school education may count toward experience. Experience installing, upgrading, and troubleshooting Windows operating systems, wireless and wired network connections, desktops, laptops, and peripherals. Familiarity with web-related technologies and widely used software packages. Ability to share knowledge and explain information in a clear and patient manner. Ability to follow directions and documentation to enable successful installations of new computing services. Demonstrated ability to work and be productive with minimal supervision, to manage competing priorities and to follow through on tasks to completion. Ability to work with others in a collegial way, to be flexible, self-motivated and to think creatively. A clear understanding and commitment to excellent customer service and the importance of timely response to and regular communication with the customer. Candidates are expected to articulate a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the position. Desirable: Bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with disk imaging software, database applications, and Linux. Public service/customer service experience. Demonstrated desire to take initiative in learning about new technologies and support methods.

HOURS: 35 hours per week. Monday-Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Some flexibility possible.
