The MIT Libraries is seeking an energetic, service-oriented individual to participate in providing quality public service to the Hayden Library community. This position provides the opportunity for developing and using a myriad of library skill sets related to course reserves, circulation and information services and is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a dynamic academic library setting. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Reserves Coordinator oversees Hayden Library Reserves Collections and Services, including both print and electronic materials. S/he builds and maintains positive, effective, and collaborative working relationships with faculty and instructors and communicates with them and their TAs and AAs to ensure that reserves materials and services are provided in a manner that is timely and that effectively meets instructional needs. The Coordinator collaborates with subject librarians and staff to facilitate communication and ensure accurate implementation of reserves and library course pages, and works with Collection Managers in ordering required materials. S/he coordinates reserves processing and preparation activities of access services staff, including scanning materials for electronic reserves, and collaborates with other reserves units to recommend and implement system-wide policies and procedures. S/he maintains, analyzes and reports statistical data on Hayden Library print and electronic reserves and is required to maintain knowledge of copyright issues related to reserves services. It is also expected that the Reserves Coordinator contribute to the analysis of trends in university course reserves and services, recommend changes in current policies and procedures and recommend enhancements to current services and the development of new services. S/he regularly staffs the Hayden Library Service Desk in providing circulation services, basic reference services and information referral. The Reserves Coordinator participates in department and system-wide projects; may participate on system-wide committees and performs other duties as assigned. This is a period of transformation for libraries, as more resources are made available electronically and user expectations evolve. This position like all positions in the MIT Libraries must maintain some flexibility and adaptability in meeting service needs.

QUALIFICATIONS: Two years direct/related experience which provide a solid understanding of library functions; post high school education may count toward experience. Well-developed service orientation and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Punctuality, dependability, and attention to detail. Demonstrated initiative and ability to establish and manage competing priorities and work under pressure. Capacity for working effectively and flexibly in a team environment with minimal supervision, to exercise independent judgment and to direct the work of others. Ability to interpret and apply library policies to benefit users and willingness to pursue results through appropriate channels. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Experience with Windows computing environment and the Web as well as working knowledge of basic software programs such as Word and Excel. Demonstrated proficiency with automated circulation systems and affinity for and adeptness in learning, understanding and using technology. Physical stamina to shelve and shift books and other library material. Candidates are expected to articulate a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the position. Preferred – Experience with automated circulation systems. Experience with reserves processing. Familiarity with academic libraries.

HOURS: 35 hours per week. Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
