MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MIT/LL) has pioneered in advanced electronics since its origin in 1951 as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lincoln Laboratory research focuses on advanced technology to problems of national security. Materials relate to the Laboratory’s mission areas: space control, air and missile defense technology, communication and information technology, IRS systems and technology, advanced electronics technology, homeland protection, and air traffic control. As part of the Knowledge Management and Archives Team the successful candidate will be responsible for the more traditional aspects of the Archives as well as working with colleagues in Knowledge Services Sector and the Information Services Department to integrate the Laboratory’s born-digital collection into the existing collection. This position requires someone with experience in a wide variety of media including born-digital objects. As such, we are looking for an energetic, creative, and experienced Assistant Archivist to join our team to maintain and market the more traditional archival program and help direct both the strategic and project planning for our digital resources.
Responsibilities:
Working within a collaborative and team environment and under the direction of the Archivist, the Assistant Archivist will provide consistent, accurate, secure access to Laboratory intellectual property and proprietary records. This position will require the incumbent to:
- Appraise, acquire, arrange, and describe physical archival records
- Collaborate with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the capture, storage, integration, and long-term accessibility of archival digital objects / collections
- Provide customized in-depth and on-demand research utilizing both traditional and non-traditional research approaches and technologies
- Identify and organise content for Archives internal website
- Document MIT/LL technical innovations through the design of on- and off-line bibliographies, exhibitions and tools
- Work with interns
- Support and participate in other work of department as assigned
- MLS from an ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science program with concentration on Archival practices
- Three years of professional archival experience in an established archive
- Demonstrated experience in using computer applications for the management of archival holdings and the creation of digital documents for outreach via virtual exhibits, blogs etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the creation and management of electronic records, especially in a content management system
- Knowledge of metadata standards and current descriptive practices (e.g. MARC, MARCXML, MODS, Dublin Core, EAD, PREMIS, METS, XML, DACS, etc.)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
- Ability to manage workload in a timely, effective manner with minimum supervision
- Ability to work calmly and effectively in situations under pressure in a changing environment
- Must be able to obtain DoD Security Clearance (normal procedures, see below)
SECURITY: Personnel working at the Laboratory are required to have a DoD Security Clearance to the SECRET level. In some instances personnel cleared CONFIDENTIAL may work at the Laboratory pending the issuance of further clearance. Proposals should indicate the clearance status of each person proposed. All personnel are required to have United States Citizenship.

- Experience with the Archivist Toolkit
- Supervising and training others
