Institution: Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library

Job Title: Library Director - Epping, New Hampshire

Duties/Description: Harvey-Mitchell Memorial Library, in the town of Epping, N.H., seeks a creative and dynamic, full-time Library Director. Epping is a community of 6,000+ year-round residents located in the southeastern part of New Hampshire, with proximity to lakes, ocean, mountains and major cities, including Boston. The 2009 annual budget is approximately $142,000 and the staff size is 2.8 FTEs. The collection size includes 18,000 items housed in approximately 3,000 sq ft.

The Library Director is hired by and reports directly to the Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director performs professional and administrative library work, directing and managing all activities and operations of the Library.
Duties include:

  • Supervise all library staff, including training, scheduling, and evaluation. Interview and recommend candidates for library positions.
  • Recommend, write, and submit for approval, and implement policies and procedures, which incorporate library best practice.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of the library facility and grounds.
  • Act as library liaison to the Friends of the Library, town departments, schools, and community groups.
  • Participate in daily library functions (circulation, reference) as needed.
  • Determine community interests and develop responsive new library programs and services, incorporating new technologies to enhance service delivery whenever possible.
  • Oversee library outreach and public relations, including maintenance of the library website.
  • Prepare financial and narrative reports for distribution at monthly Board of Trustees meetings. Report library statistics to the Board and to the NH State Library.
  • Work with the Board of Trustees to prepare the annual operating budget for the Library. Administer the approved budget.
  • Work with the Board of Trustees to develop and maintain the strategic plan, outlining immediate and long-range goals,
  • Work with donors and patrons to foster charitable gifts and to accommodate purchase preferences. Acknowledge receipt of all library gifts.
  • Write grant proposals and pursue other fundraising opportunities to actualize library goals.
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor in all interactions with patrons and library staff.
  • Maintain professional standing by membership in professional organizations and attending professional meetings and conferences. Encourage professional development of staff, as appropriate.
  • Perform any other duties, as may be requested or assigned by the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications: Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university preferred. Alternatively, candidates should have three to five years of professional library experience, preferably with management responsibilities, including experience with teambuilding.

The Library Director should have a thorough knowledge of municipal government; proven ability to work effectively with Boards of Trustees, Friends of the Library, and governing bodies; the ability to work effectively with town and school employees, and elected town officials; knowledge of modern library principles and best practices; the ability to recruit, train, and motivate staff for optimal public service delivery; a strong understanding of information technology and its application in public libraries; the ability to demonstrate courtesy and tact in all interactions with community members; the ability to develop and manage budgets; good communication, public relations, and presentation skills.

Salary: $36,000 plus benefits. Salary negotiable, based on qualifications. Excellent benefits including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, holidays and sick days; and participation in the NH Retirement System.
