The Harvard University Library’s Office for Scholarly Communications is seeking a Simmons student for an internship position in the 2009 summer semester.

Harvard’s open access policy has been called “a bold move to boost the unrestricted, global use of research articles” (Boston Globe, February 12, 2008) and a “significant boost to the open access movement, which champions free, permanent online access to peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly material” (American Libraries, February 15, 2008).

Although the internship is not a paid position, it is an opportunity to participate in a revolutionary approach to the dissemination of knowledge and to gain unique professional experience in the development of an institutional repository.

Responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Work closely with Harvard professors, helping faculty to place their articles in DASH, Harvard’s digital repository of scholarly work

  • Gain experience with metadata formats and quality control measures via hands-on experience with our institutional repository

  • Help compile an open access reading list and “related links” area for the OSC website

Requirements:

  • Current student in Simmons Graduate School of Library & Information Science

  • Demonstrated interest in digital libraries and/or scholarly communications

  • Course or work experience related to journal publishing and metadata a plus

  • Previous office experience a plus

Interested Simmons students should contact:
