Archivist for Ancient Near Eastern Collection

The American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), located at Boston University, invites applications and nominations for an archivist for a NEH-funded program to preserve, collect, and make available its collections of archaeological records from the last 110 years. This full-time position will be for the 27-month duration of the grant (from July 1, 2009 - September 30, 2011). The successful candidate will organize and describe the archival collection, oversee the preparation of a finding aid, and supervise the cataloguing of records. The collection is based at ASOR’s headquarters at Boston University with a subset at the Semitic Museum, Harvard University. The archivist will work in both locations. In addition, the finding aid will include items from both locations, as well as additional materials located in Jerusalem. The work of the successful candidate will be supported by a part-time assistant in Boston.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in library science, archival management or related field. Knowledge of the principles and practices of archival management, experience in database management and digital preservation, skills in oral and written communications are also required. The ability to work cooperatively with staff and patrons is also important. Familiarity with MARC, EAD and Dublin Core is preferred. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
