Youth Services Librarian - Chemung County Library District (Elmira, NY)

The Chemung County Library District is seeking a Youth Services Librarian to serve the patrons of our central library in Elmira, to provide leadership to our talented clerical staff, and to participate in the development of new and improved library services for our communities. Primary duties of the Youth Services Librarian will include:

• Work with library clerical staff to create and implement a comprehensive series of programs for children and young adults for the Steele Memorial Library
• Selection and collection development of the youth services print, non-print, and electronic collections
• Participate in the management team - Library District director, head of reference & adult services, head of circulation services, Library District administrative assistant, head of youth services - in problem solving, scheduling, developing new and improved services of the Steele Memorial Library, the central library of the Southern Tier Library System
• Supervise library staff
• Train children and their parents how to use the resources of the Internet and other more traditional resources of the public library

• Other professional duties, including working with Story Stew, our library’s storytelling group.

  We are looking for a team-oriented individual who will work beside other highly motivated professionals to enrich the program of service to children and young adults at the Steele Memorial Library. We are located in beautiful Upstate New York, between the Pennsylvania border and the Finger Lakes. A medium-sized library, we circulate 325,000 items a year.

  Applicants must qualify for Librarian 1 permanent appointment through Civil Service classification.

  Compensation at the Librarian 1 level is $35,274 per year. Fringe benefits include Blue Cross / Blue Shield major medical, paid vacation & sick leave. Library employees become a member of the New York State retirement program.
