Courses and Registration

On this page

page topHow Registration Works

Registration instructions are sent by mail to incoming students two months prior to the start of the term, as long as the tuition deposit has been received by GSLIS. For information regarding registration, see http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/courses/registration/paper.shtml.

When registering for courses remember there are special course number designations for courses on the Mount Holyoke campus. The course schedules listed at http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/courses/schedules/ separate the Boston and Mount Holyoke campus courses onto separate pages, but in AARC all courses are listed together, sorted by course number. When registering, please note that all courses with '20' as the section identifier take place at Mount Holyoke. Example:

  • LIS 403-20N: Section of LIS 403 on the Mount Holyoke campus (3 credits)

Please note: All courses offered are three credits. Students who entered the program prior to Fall 2005, however, have the option of taking them at four credits. (For more information, please see http://my.simmons.edu/gslis/curriculum/.)

page topGeneral Tips & Reminders

Some things to keep in mind as you register each semester:

  • Some courses are offered only once a year: try to plan ahead using the links below.
  • Occasionally a course will not be offered as planned because faculty are not available to teach it in a given semester. For example, a professor may go on sabbatical or an adjunct may be unavailable.
  • Registration priority is determined by the number of credits you have completed and have in progress. Students with more credits register first.
  • Taking four courses during fall and spring semester is possible but is not recommended. Please take a look at the Maximum Credit Load Policy for more specific information.
  • Archives and SLTP students should keep in mind that internships and practicums are part of their program requirements, and should leave time for these work experiences.
  • All GSLIS students are strongly encouraged to find internships and jobs to gain experience while they are in school, so you may want to consider this in planning your coursework. See the Financial Info—Jobs section for help finding work.
