GSLIS New Student Advising Day
GSLIS Technology and the TOR
What is the TOR?
TOR stands for Technology Orientation Requirement. It is an online tutorial with graded assessments, designed to acquaint you with Simmons library tools and technology. The TOR has two parts: the first part covers useful online resources, search techniques, and technology specific to Simmons College; the second requires you to build a simple webpage and construct a page on a wiki.
How can I get help and computer
support for completing my TOR?
The Tech Lab offers handouts, workshops, and live support for completing the TOR. If you have a question, try:
- looking on the Tech Lab Download Center for useful handouts
- stopping by the Tech Lab in P-213 (Tech Lab hours)
- calling the Tech Lab at (617) 521-2802 or emailing gslis_tor@simmons.edu
- signing up for a workshop on completing the TOR Part 1 or Part 2 requirement
For more information about the Tech Lab services and workshop dates, visit the Tech Lab website.
When is the TOR deadline?
TOR Part 1 is due on on Monday, February 16 by midnight; TOR Part 2 is due Monday, March 2 by midnight. Note that these deadlines are very soon after you start classes. If you are unable to complete the Technology Orientation Requirement successfully before the deadline, you will not be able to register for upcoming semesters. If you are having trouble completing the TOR, please contact the GSLIS Tech Lab.
How many computers are available on campus?
For a complete list of resources visit the Tech Lab website.
During Advising Day, the GSLIS Tech Lab will also be offering TOR Part 1 workshops for students who feel they need a refresher on computing best practices. Topics will include naming, saving, and managing files, taking screenshots, using keyboard shortcuts, and accessing GSLIS specific technology. In addition, you will also gain the confidence to explore applications at your whim –a necessary skill to have as you embark on your career in librarianship. Workshops will run 45 minutes and will be held in the GSLIS Tech Lab. You may sign up with the GSLIS Tech Lab table on Advising Day. Please note, these workshops are not mandatory. Workshop times will be announced soon, and you can register at http://gslis.simmons.edu/signup.
