Awards & Honors
The following awards and honors are given to graduating students. In general, award recipients are selected by the granting organization or by faculty vote.

Beta Phi Mu
Instituted in 1972, Simmons' Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the international library and information science honor society, gives recognition to students who maintain outstanding academic records at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Those students who qualify for election to Beta Phi Mu are invited by the faculty to join this chapter each spring.
Estelle Jussim Award
The Estelle Jussim Award is given to a graduating GSLIS student who has demonstrated great promise in the visual arts. It honors Dr. Estelle Jussim, a GSLIS faculty member who was a distinguished photographic historian and scholar, and who exhibited such professional accomplishments in the visual arts and high academic achievement.
GSLIS Western Campus Leadership Award
This award was first presented in 2004 by the GSLIS faculty and administration to an outstanding student in the GSLIS western campus program who best exemplifies the leadership values of academic excellence, community building, services, and commitment to the success of other students and the program.
Kenneth R. Shaffer Award
The Award was established in 1981 by the School to honor Dr. Shaffer, who was the director of the School for almost 30 years. It is given each year to that student whom the faculty has identified as outstanding and possessing great leadership potential. A cash award is presented to the selected student, whose name is added to a plaque displayed in the GSLIS Library.
Outstanding Information Science Student Award
Awarded by the Student Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, this honor recognizes academic achievement in the area of information science, and contributions to the Chapter.
