Ode to an Orange

First of all, can I just say how intimidated I am by this class? I hope I am really up for the challenge of being in the honors program. I have never though of myself as a very strong writer, so now that I know much this class revovles around writing, I am very nervous about how well I am going to be able to do.

When I was reading Ode to an Orange, it actually made me feel a little strange. I'm not sure how much i like descriptive writing like this. At first it was interesting, but the description seemed to go on for too long and it just became painstaking to read. I remember thinking, "when is this going to be over?". I guess i need something more fast paced for me to enjoy. I can apreciate the style of writing that Woiwode used for this essay, but I guess it's just not my favorite to read.

Hey,
I know exactly what you mean about not liking really descriptive writing. I didn't get bored reading this, probably because it was short so I knew there was an end near, but there have been plenty of books where I couldn't stand how descriptive the writing was. I need events and action to hold my attention, so when not much really goes on in the plot, I'll just read the book but be thinking about something totally different, then I'll finally realize it and have to go back and re-read the entire section because I would have no idea what went on.

Yeah, I feel the exact same way about the course and the essay. I mean descriptive writing is nice and can be very effective, but sometimes it can just get to be a bit too much in my opinion. I had to read this essay a few times in order to get the meaning out of it.

Katie, I agree as well. I am not a huge fan of descriptive writing and it does lose my attention quickly. I found myself flipping the page to see how much I had left when reading this piece and I found myself having to reread a paragraph that I just read because I couldn't remember anything. But that's okay, a taste of every type of writing, literature, whatever else is always interesting and enjoyable (to some extent).

I disagree about the descriptive writing because I enjoy reading it. But that's not what my post is about. The whole blog aspect is bothering me. It's great to get feedback about our work, but I'm the kind of person who doesn't like everyone reading her writing. But more than that, what happened to handing in an old-fashioned essay on paper? I understand the purpose of this, but it's aggravating me. Just a comment....
