The Ideal of Parity . . . The Reality of Disparity--A Simmons Library Display

Posted September 26, 2005

The Simmons Library is currently featuring a display of books examining how our ideals of parity are not always reflected in reality, as disparities continue to exist in America and around the globe.

If a just society aspires to create parity among its citizens, then our ideals should include the provision of equal access to health care, education, employment, and resources. But is our reality one of disparity, rather than parity? How does unequal distribution of power, income, and privilege affect the peoples of the world and of our nation? What can we learn about equality and inequality from our struggles with issues of race, class, and gender? What roles do industrialization and globalization play in changing the distribution of wealth and power among our planet’s inhabitants? The Simmons Library offers books by authors who are asking these questions and searching for answers.

The display, entitled The Ideal of Parity … The Reality of Disparity, is located on the second floor of the library, across from the Reference Desk.

Please stop by the Simmons Library to explore these issues that affect every one of us, and to check out a book from our new display.
