Library Awarded IMLS Grant: MassBLAST

Posted October 04, 2005

The Simmons Library has been awarded a grant of $661,449 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as part of the Librarians for the 21st Century program. The grant project, known as MassBLAST, Building Library Awareness and Staff for Tomorrow in Massachusetts, aims to recruit a diverse population to the library profession in Massachusetts and throughout the country.

The three year project will build on H. W. Wilson Foundation-funded pilot internship programs at Simmons College and the University of Massachusetts Boston and develop a high-quality, flexible internship curriculum for high school students that can be adapted for any library. Guidance for recruitment of interns and for funding and management of an internship program will be developed to complement the curriculum. The entire program package will be made readily available on a Simmons College website for any library that wishes to establish its own internship program.

The Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the University of Massachusetts Boston Library are partners in this project.
