Student Involvement in Open Access to Scholarly Communication
Tuesday, 27 May, 2008, 1pm
Lefavour Hall, LEF 316
Beatley Library, the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at Simmons College and the Fenway Library Consortium (FLC) are sponsoring a discussion about student involvement in the open access movement, and how libraries can engage students in that conversation.
GAVIN BAKER will lead the session. Gavin is a SPARC Outreach Fellow and has developed SPARC’s “The Right to Research” student outreach campaign. He is an Assistant Editor at the ‘Open Access News’ blog, Community Manager at the Open Students, a blog for students about open access and a columnist in Science Progress. Gavin holds a BA in Political Science. As a student he co-founded University of Florida Students for Free Culture chapter, served on national Students for Free Culture board and was elected to University of Florida Student Senate, passing the first university-wide resolution supporting open access.
OPEN-ACCESS (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder. OA is entirely compatible with peer review, and all the major OA initiatives for scientific and scholarly literature insist on its importance.
The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) is an international alliance of academic and research libraries working to correct imbalances in the scholarly publishing system. Developed by the Association of Research Libraries, SPARC’s pragmatic focus is to stimulate the emergence of new scholarly communication models that expand the dissemination of scholarly research and reduce financial pressures on libraries.
We welcome all Simmons faculty, staff and students, and the staff of the FLC libraries for an informative and enjoyable discussion.
Light refreshments will be offered!
