Featured Internship Opportunity: Christian Science Monitor
(Librarian’s note:
Think internships are just for undergraduates? Think again! Internships provide a great opportunity for grad students, recent graduates, and career changers to explore potential career paths, gain resume-building work experience, and develop their networks.)
The Christian Science Monitor Library is offering a semester-long internship for library science students or recent graduates interested in news librarianship. The intern will work with a staff of two librarians and a library assistant serving the headquarters’ newsroom and 15 bureaus across the globe. This position will provide excellent hands-on experience in all areas of news librarianship; the internship is unpaid and the intern should receive academic credit. The ideal candidate should be interested in current events and be able to work in a deadline-driven environment.
Responsibilities will include: Providing research for daily news stories and longer-term news assignments using various online resources and commercial database services such as Nexis, Factiva, and ProQuest; digital archiving and indexing of photos and PDFs using Merlin; creating and delivering training classes for staff; intranet web page design and development; weeding and reorganization of collection.
Schedule: Start and end dates are negotiable, however length of internship is for a minimum of 12 weeks. Work days are flexible as well, but should revolve around the librarians’ schedules of Sunday-Friday, 730am-430pm; working up to a minimum of 30 hours/week.
To apply, send resume, cover letter, and three references no later than July 31st, 2006 to:
