Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks, Viacom, was interviewed about her position as Fortune’s 12th “Most Powerful Woman” this year. Her words of wisdom include, “I think today the pressure of school and career pathing and all that stuff you hear about … sometimes I feel like people come in with a very defined idea of where they want to be. And aside from saying ‘I’d love to work on the Jon Stewart Show or for Stephen Colbert, — who wouldn’t? — I think that you probably need to be open to an opportunity or an industry and jump in. So my advice would be, if an opportunity comes up, take it. Make changes early in your career. Be opportunistic. Take on things that are outside your responsibility. Don’t be worried about stepping on toes, and make connections, make friends. It helps you later on.”
