GSLIS Research Colloquium
Presented by James Matarazzo, Dean Emeritus
October 3, 2006

Report:
Citing a recent headline on MSN.com, which included librarianship as number three on the list of least popular jobs, Professor Matarazzo reviewed the profession’s workforce trends over the last 30 years. His conclusion is that LIS schools today cannot keep up with the number of librarians who retire each year, usually at the age of 65. The reasons for the situation include less than competitive salaries, a negative image of the profession, and the fact that frequently it is not a first career choice, but rather one that is entered later in life.
