Martha Irvine, an author devoted to issues on 20-year-olds and younger, reports on “helicopter” parents. Does this sound like your parents? “Helicopter” parents hover over their children from infancy to adulthood, and career counselors are noticing the effects. Parents have been seen at career fairs, handing out resumes, calling career counselors, and calling employers to find out why their son or daughter did not get a certain position. Employers question why young professionals need to call their parents when offered positions, and career counselors are beginning to worry about students’ independence. Parents, however, are concerned that students need support and encouragement in finding work.
