by Ceileigh Syme, Earth Island Journal, Winter 2007, Special section (p. 5-6).
For many college students, the prospect of seeking an internship comes with its own dilemma: do they want an internship with a prestigious corporation that will probably involve some tedious office tasks but look great on their resume, or do they want to take a summer internship dealing with something they really love but that might not be perceived as providing them with the most marketable of skills?
In the following article, the author powerfully relates the thinking process that led up to her “nontraditional” summer internship experience in Thailand in the area of environmental education and makes a strong case for choosing an internship that allows one to really explore their passions. Rather than looking back upon her experience in Thailand as merely an interesting jaunt with no further relevance in her life, she credits her internship with giving her a “life direction.” Read the article to discover what new opportunities she was afforded during her summer internship, what she learned about herself, and what she is doing now, thanks to the courage she exhibited in blazing her own path.
