Are you thinking about working in an academic library? Academic librarians are a diverse group with many interests and skills. You might be interested to learn that many younger academic librarians who enter the field are doing more “information technology” tasks than traditional librarian tasks.

The 2005 demographic data, from the Association of Research Libraries, show that younger (under age 35) staff in academic libraries are in charge of “information technology, human resources, fundraising, publishing, instructional technology, and facilities management.” They are less likely to have a degree in library science and are a more ethnically and racially diverse group. Younger colleagues tend to do more technology centered jobs than their older colleagues, due to the fact that many of these technological jobs did not exist when their colleagues were learning about librarianship.

Check out the full article (linked above) to learn more about these “feral professionals” of the library world. The article reminds us, however, that traditional librarian values are still core to the profession. All staff need to find the best way to work together to share knowledge and skills to help their patrons.
