It seems safe to say that a fair share of people who enjoy their job and plan to make it into a long-term career do not always know where they want their career to take them in the coming years. Or else, they do have some general long-range goals but without a specific game plan to achieve them. Rather than just going with the flow and hoping for the best, this article stresses the importance for career-builders to create a written five-year plan that maps out their goals (for advancement, salary increases, reducing personal debt load, etc.) and what it will take to reach those goals in terms of their current skill sets and then to make an assessment of which skills they will need to acquire to keep up with anticipated changes in their industry. Also of great importance, the article stresses that creating the career map must involve an investigation of the employment outlook for their industry as a whole. Through such detailed career planning, chances are strong that career-builders will be less likely to face stagnation and disillusionment over the course of their careers.(NOTE: While the author specifically addresses knowledge workers, the five-year plan strategy certainly applies to all skilled workers.)
