In this brief article, recruiting experts from around the US provide useful advice on common mistakes in salary negotiation and ways to avoid them. The first and most frequent mistake is discussing salary issues too early in the interview process. The article provides some useful solutions and ideas for dealing with such situations. The second recommendation is to fully understand your previous compensation packages so that you can negotiate a competitive and fair amount at your new position. Also, remember the total compensation package when reviewing an offer, since there are many details to evaluate in addition to the annual salary. Aside from that, a job applicant should not make money the number one priority when applying for a job; there are many other issues to consider, including whether the position is a good fit for your overall career goals. Lastly, be honest throughout the negotiation process and remember that you can always say “no” to an offer if it doesn’t match your needs and/or expectations.
