Stanley Wilder, The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2/23/07.

“If you work in an academic library and are under 35, you probably don’t have a lot in common with your older counterparts.” Thus begins this article, which analyzes demographic data in order to discuss the nontraditional positions that are currently dominated by younger library workers. Interestingly, many of these individuals, while bringing new skills to the libraries, also lack a library degree. Additionally, this group includes an increased cultural and ethnic diversity. These new additions to academic libraries are to be celebrated and embraced since, the author states, “the libraries that thrive in the coming years will be those that apply the full range of nontraditional expertise in the service of those timeless values, and not the other way around.”
