In this Boston Globe Op-Ed, Ellen Goodman discusses the “Mother’s Day tradition” of economists tallying up what the salary for being a full-time mother should be (this year it was calculated at $138,095) and the broader implications of how difficult it is to be mother in the workplace. Goodman argues that mothers are treated as “the third gender” in the workplace, as if they are less educated, committed, or talented than co-workers without children. Goodman hints that what may be interpreted as mothers “opting out” of the workplace to raise their children is actually a force out when companies block them from promotions, pay raises, and other benefits. Goodman calls for women to unite around this issue and prove once and for all that one can be a good mother and a good professional.
