Unfortunately, times are such that even when you have a brand new job, you always have to have an exit strategy in case your job suddenly disappears. Job loss can be caused by many things, including sudden company mergers or acquisitions or a change in management. Amy Dorn Kopelan, author of the new book I Didn’t See It Coming, was former vice-president for direct marketing at ABC when she was suddenly told that she had two weeks to leave her position after her division was shut down. She claims that there are many ways to protect yourself, even if you’ve already been handed your pink slip. She advises you to continuously network for new job contacts, consider how you can best market yourself, and save money for a year’s worth of expenses, even when your job seems perfectly stable, since preparation is the best fight against the pink slip. She also encourages negotiation with your company on severance packages, exit dates, and even filling a new position in your company. You always have more negotiating power than you think, and there is always a way to protect yourself, she advises.
