Erin White, Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition), May 22, 2007, p. B6.
Even for the best and brightest, the transition from college to the workplace can be a difficult and stressful experience. This article offers advice from two career counselors who have worked with new graduates to prepare them for the adjustment from student to employee. One strong recommendation is to read and learn as much as possible about “their soon-to-be employer, its competitors and its industry,” including online research and trade publications. Also, recent grads should read up on general current events — not just those items related to their job — in order to avoid the impression that they have had “their heads in the sand” throughout their studies. Lastly, it can be beneficial to seek out current employees at the company as possible mentors and to attend any company-sponsored social or networking events before the first day of work.
