Analyzing whale dung? Swimming in raw sewage? Studying the decay patterns of garbage? And you thought your job was hard! Those are just a few of the scientific jobs to win spots on Popsci.com’s “bottom 10 list” of the worst jobs in science. Some of the job details are disgusting (analyzing maggots on murder victims) or boring (fixing all the mistakes in Microsoft products), but all are necessary in the field of science. Analyzing garbage helps produce new information about how garbage breaks down, which can lead to better recycling science. And as painful as it may be to look closely at a piece of whale dung, that is where scientists get much of their information about a whale’s genetic patterns, eating habits, and biotoxin measurements. Besides being essential parts of science, these jobs are often well paid too, because, not surprisingly, it can be difficult to fill the position of “garbologist.” There are rewards for those who are willing to get down and dirty for their jobs, so don’t brush these jobs off as merely being disgusting.
