Hiawatha Bray, Boston Globe, August 22, 2007.
This past weekend, it was disclosed that contact information for thousands of account holders were stolen from Monster.com as part of an online fraud scheme. (NOTE: The stolen information does not include bank account, credit card, or Social Security numbers.) It seems the thieves were especially interested in the email addresses, which they then used to send falsified messages appearing to come from Monster.com, urging the recipient to download one of two pieces of software. These are actually dangerous programs that if installed, can record passwords and other sensitive information, which the thieves can then use to clean out accounts, or else lock down vital files on your computer and only unlock them if a “ransom” is paid. If you have a Monster account, please be wary of any suspicious messages that appear to come from a Monster address.
