Who Will You Be This Summer? By Lisa Belkin, Columnist. The New York Times; 01/06/2008 Section 7: Column 0.
Here’s an article that discusses the popularity of summer internship programs amongst College students. Internships have the potential to provide more substantial experience and generate more valuable connections than the average summer job. Although potentially an opportunity for getting a real taste of an industry, it is now necessary for students to make internship arrangements earlier than ever.
One career counseling center warns that recruitment for the most coveted positions happens 10 months in advance. Some internship programs at companies like Google or XM Radio have their positions filled by New Year’s Day. So, if you are considering spending your summer as a fabulous intern, you might want to get things rolling now. Other obstacles include the matter of large numbers of applicants compared to number of available spots, as well as heightened qualifications amongst competitors. The article has some creative and resourceful ideas to combat these. And of course, some students do not have the luxury of working for free. Find out how to find alternative programs that do offer compensation and how to go about lining up one of those.
