Size Matters: Is a Small Company the Place for You?
Big companies may have the deep pockets and the name recognition, but for some job seekers smaller companies offer major incentives. In a recent Wall Street Journal article by Sarah E. Needleman (Mar 4, 2008, pg. B.6), the merits and drawbacks of working for the little guys are explored.
According to criteria outlined in the article, a company is considered small to mid-sized if it employs under 400 people and has an annual revenue of less than $25 million. While such places often cannot match the salaries paid by the Yahoo!s and Amazons of the world, they do offer plum advantages that these behemoths could never dream of, such as:
-Closer proximity to upper management
-The chance to explore job duties outside your specific title
-Greater influence in the company’s day-to-day operations
-Shorter work weeks and more flexible schedules
Whether working in a small company is a career goal or one stop on your path to becoming the next CEO of Google, it can offer valuable and unique opportunities.
