Emailing is part of the daily routine and it’s something you’ve probably been doing for years. But are you sure that you have mastered the art of the electronic message just because you do it all the time? Perhaps you are adept at sending and picking up messages and all the rest of the usual activities associated with emailing. But there likely are important ways in which your skills could improve, especially when it comes to professional correspondence. In fact, there may be something that you do on a regular basis that is considered somewhat of a communication faux-pas. And you don’t want that do you? Here we have the 14 Rules of Email.

This publication from Toronto lays down the basic laws of cyber exchange, such as, DO NOT WRITE IN CAPITAL LETTERS, as this is sometimes perceived as yelling in the email world. Exclamation points and use of the passive voice are ill-advised in professional emails. The rules also cover the importance of using Bcc for large mailings, and the value of acknowledging receipt of a message to which you’re not yet ready to respond.

So, if you’ve got a couple of minutes, make sure you’re up on your email etiquette. It’s a small thing that could make a big difference!
