U.S. Government Seeks Next Generation of Leaders By Kermit Kaleba, T+D (Training + Development) 62 no4 14 Ap 2008.
The United States government is the largest employer in the country. And while both the private sector and public sector are faced with the challenge of preparing the next generation of leaders to replace the retiring baby boomers, the government may face unique challenges in recruiting and developing their future workforce. According to a report generated from the survey “Federal Human Capital: A Perfect Storm”, the government’s transition into the next generation is made worse because of hiring freezes that took place in the 1990’s. This resulted in the current state of affairs in which there are relatively few mid-career employees compared to skilled senior workers, leaving a numbers gap with regard to those who are prepared to fill leadership positions that will be coming up.
