“Make the best of an unfavorable situation” is the advice Syliva Jimison gives for employees that are part of minority groups, in her recent article published in Diverse Issues in Higher Education. The article presents the testimonial of a black employee dealing with the (not so) subtle barriers in a homogeneous workplace.

The author talks about the feelings of loneliness and the fact she never felt quite accepted. She suggests getting involved with the local community – organizing events, volunteering at community meetings, etc. – as a way to bring forth her experience, ideas and culture and thus improving the community life. The author warns of the emotional toll that these efforts have taken, and suggests that a strong “support system” is required in order to survive in environment where one is not quite comfortable.
