For the aspiring librarians, Leah Massar Bloom writes in the Library Journal 5 tips to keep in mind when applying for a job:

  • “Get them what they ask for”: if they want a cover letter, send one; if they want a list references, make sure to include it;
  • “Spell-check … and more”: there is nothing worse than receiving a an otherwise qualified resume, but with spelling or grammatical errors;
  • “We all love to read”, so please leave it out of your resume; even less relevant when applying for an academic or special library;
  • “Unless it was Dewey …”: refrain from name-dropping; unless somebody asks who your professors where in college, it is considered imprudent to mention who your teachers were – no matter how famous or influential they might be;
  • “Flattery won’t work”: there is a fine line between being polite and “laying it a bit thick”. Be sure not to cross it.

The Career Resource Library has additional resources on how to write an effective cover letter and resume both in print and online.
