Networking seems to be a popular topic in employment news recently. For many individuals who have held a job for many years and have lost it recently due to the economic downturn, networking is a muscle they haven’t needed to use until now. In his article, Dana Mattoli provides some tools to help you start the process of networking. A few of these tips include:

  1. E-mailing former colleagues. They act as a contact themselves and may also be able to connect you with someone you had both worked with but with whom you have lost touch.

  2. Joining a social networking site such as LinkedIn. They are a great way of finding both people you already know as well as people in a similar field. Keep in mind these sites don’t do all the work for you. It is crucial to try to set up a few in-person meetings with people you know, keeping it brief out of respect for your contact’s time.

  3. Looking into your field’s professional associations. Look for events held in your area- it will give you a chance to network with people in your field “who speak your industry’s language.”

  4. Connecting with your alumni office. Colleges have increased their services to meet the demand for resources by their past students, and often will provide access to an alumni contact database. Simmons’ Alumnet offers the perfect forum for connecting with Simmons alums. Using the advanced search, students can limit by profession, Simmons major, and geographic location.
