One – often ignored – way of expanding your network is to seek out a mentor; the following article by Toddi Gutner from the Wall Street Journal provides a few words of advice:
- Make a list of your goals – whether you are interested in finding out more about project management, or perhaps the human side of management; need some help navigating the corporate politics? Think about what you would like to achieve.
- Explore among possible mentors – try to find out beforehand what their style is and whether he/she would be a good fit.
- Respect your mentor’s time – in times of economic uncertainty the demands on the managers increase significantly; remember that mentorship is a two way street – try to see if there is something that you can offer – setting up a Twitter or Facebook page, improving the LinkedIn page, etc.
